Main Productive Sectors

The economy is based on agriculture, livestock, trade, and services. San Martín is the nation's leading producer of paddy rice and a leader in tilapia harvesting. Coffee, cocoa, hearts of palm, sacha inchi, soap, and chocolate are exported. Manufacturing includes palm oil and cement.

Featured Crops and Products

• Transients: hard yellow corn (32.1%), rice (31.3%), plantain (16%), cassava (12%).

• Permanent: coffee (81.1%), cocoa (5.5%).

Mining

Proven deposits of gypsum and prospective deposits of pyrite, coal, limestone and salt.

Tourism

Great potential for its biodiversity and culture, but limited by limited local government action.
